Welcoming the World!

Artemisszió has come of age! We have been working in Hungary for the last 18 years in order to develop intercultural competences so that people of diverse cultural backgrounds are able to live next to one another more peacefully and smoothly. 18 years is a long time, therefore we decided to have a big celebration: We have got a number of varied intercultural programmes between September 19 and 23, and the birthday party on the 23rd is going to be held on the A38 ship. Come and have fun with us!

Detailed programme

Monday, September 19

10-11 am Press conference with a difference and climate-brunch for members of the press

Venue: : Impact Hub Budapest (Ferenciek tere 2.)

The meals we eat have stories behind them. Let us take a closer look. What can we find out about sustainability at a breakfast table? And what does our food tell us about the connections between the climate, migration and justice?

5:30-7:00 pm Why are they coming? The „Horn of Africa” and Eritrea through the prism of the refugee crisis

Venue:  Gólya Közösségi Ház és Szövetkezeti Presszó (1083 Bókay János u. 34.)

In the present day refugee crisis in Europe, Syria and Eritrea play a major role, as countries whose citizens are most likely to receive refugee status from the European Union. For the Hungarian public the conflict in Syria is not unfamiliar; however, not many people are aware of what is happening in Africa.
Together with our guests we discuss what is important for us to know about the region usually referred to as the Horn of Africa.  Try to understand why people are fleeing from there towards Europe. Looking beyond the present situation we are trying to find answers as to what role Western powers played in the past, and what is the present geo-political context of the crisis.

Our guest speakers:
Mr. Ferenc Marko, anthropologist
Ms. Sába Tesfay, anthropologist
Mr. Bence Kocsev, international relations expert
Moderator. Ms. Diána Szántó, President of Artemisszió Foundation

Test your skills! How would you behave, if all of a sudden everything went topsy-turvy around you? What choices would you make? What would you decide to do?
„If there was a war going on in Hungary, where would you go? If the country was in shambles, your city bombed to rubble by neighbouring armies’ fighter planes? If you could see bullet-holes on the wall of your home where you live together with your family? If the windows were all shattered, the balcony gone? You decide to flee, but haven’t got enough money for the whole family to leave. You have to decide who should go and who should stay behind. You must make a decision.” An interactive game we put together based on the work of Jane Teller called „If we had a war going on” has been a great succes with secondary school and university students as well. Come and play it with us.

6:00-8:00 pm Soundbathing workshop

venue: Artemisszió Alapítvány office  (1085, Pál u. 6.)

We’ve been working together with Krisztina Mandula Filep, a member of Hangfürdő for years now. We’ve done extraordinary music lessons in the refugee camp in Vámosszabadi, she had taught Hungarian folk songs to immigrants, and they have performed together as Vagabond Birds at our events. This workshop gives insight into working with one’s voice, in a world where language does not count and there are no borders. After the methodological demonstration the Soundbath gorup will perform a 30-minute concert.

Hungary in 2086. There is a problem with the water. There is no more of it… What would happen if in the not too far away future Hungary would suffer a severe drought? What would happen if because of that a lot of us had to flee the country? What options would we have? The show begins at this point and leaves room for debate for all of us to think about the consequences of social problems brought on by climate change.

Thursday, September 22

3:00-6:00 pm Tree of Life workshop

Venue: Budapest Pont (1053, Királyi Pál u. 18.)

The methodology of the Tree of Life gives an opportunity to individuals and groups who have been through a traumatic experience, or are stil in the difficult situation, to think about and tell stories about their lives and by doing this, become stronger, more conscious and more active. The method consists of drawing trees of life, thereby finding the roots, skills, competences, knowledge and dreams of the participants, all the accomplices in their lives. Workers of the Artemisszió Foundation have completed such activities in the past six months for various target groups. For example, for civil servants, for pupils in primary school, for unaccompanied minor refugee children living at the Fót Home for Children. Those attending this workshop will receive information about the method, we will share our experiences, and can give some advice as to how to adapt this method to their own work.

5:00-8:00 pm Calligraphy workshop with Fahad and stencil making workshop with OPEN DOORS

Venue: Artemisszió Alapítvány office  (1085, Pál u. 6.)

Fahad Aliyu is a Calligrapher. He taught himself to become a master of the art of writing (or rather drawing characters) beautifully. This afternoon he will teach the basics of the trade, and parcticipants can formulate thier messages articulating diversity, equality, and respecting differences. Those who would rather work with textile instead of paper, are welcome to make a canvas bag, or on any material brought along, add their personal message, so that after the workshop even more people can see walking around on the street in the world: diversity is beautiful.
